For more information on what our cabinet has to offer, check out our YouTube page and our Careers page By joining the Permit Review and Corrective Action Section in the Hazardous Waste Branch as an Environmental Scientist II in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to identify and abate threats to human health and the environment through permitting, inspections, and providing technical assistance and education to the regulated community. Responsiblities include but are not limited to the following: Review scientific plans and reports related to the remediation of soil and groundwater contamination Prepare technical reports and documents Draft permits to regulate both remediation and post closure care at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Sites Provide technical assistance to facilities with respect to the requirements of RCRA Corrective Action and Post-closure Make recommendations to the Manager for decisions to approve or deny requests, plans, and applications from regulated facilities. Holders of this job will learn the following skills: Knowledge of the Hazardous Waste Program under the RCRA. Experience with various hazardous waste treatment and cleanup technologies. Skills and Expectations include but are not limited to the following: Environmental Science background. Understanding of geology and groundwater. Strong communication skills. Decision making. Creative and flexible thinking. Additional position information: This job will primarily be performed in an office setting but will require travel from time to time. Infrequent inspections will be performed at sites which have uneven and difficult terrain. Candidates must maintain a valid driver's license in order to drive state-owned vehicles to inspection sites. EEC provides opportunities for development and upward movement. Minimum Requirements EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area. Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.
